Dangerous Marine life

Some animals can be harmful or life threatening when swimming in Miami Beach. A purple flag at the lifeguard hut signals the presence of Miami dangerous marine life. Being an out-of-towner staying in Miami lodging, you may not know this.

Jellyfish and Portuguese Man-of-War (also called Blue Bottle Jellyfish), two examples of Miami dangerous marine life, are sometimes in Florida during winter months. If you are planning on visiting and staying in Miami lodging during that time, know that contact with them results in burning and tingling. If a jellyfish stings you, go back to your Miami lodging apply some vinegar to the sting. If a Portuguese Man-o-War stings you, put ammoniac on it.

There have only been 10 recorded shark attacks in the county of Miami Dade. The last fatal one was in 1961. Therefore, sharks are not considered a major threat in Miami.

In any case, check for the purple flag or the yellow flag with a black jellyfish for a sign of Miami dangerous marine life. This will warn you about danger, but its up to you to stay vigilant once you are in the water.
