South Florida is suffering like the rest of the economy but fortunately, tourism in Miami still remained somewhat strong. Miami appeals to domestic travelers as well as international travelers because of its trendiness and its relative affordability. Miami tourism in 2008 was strong with a heavy influx of foreign travelers because the dollar was very weak for most of the year making holidays in Miami relatively cheap. Miami Beach is at the end of a large scale hotel renovation program adding thousands of rooms which started almost 8 years ago.A time when tourism in Miami starts to show signs of weakness is the worst time to finally have those rooms ready as this added inventory of rooms will not make things any easier.
On the up side, vacationers will win by attaining access to new Miami hotel rooms or new Miami vacation rental properties at a steep discount. After years of boosting room rates, Miami hotels began slowly discounting rooms last year.
