Rip Current in Miami



Miami rip current is the most important danger you will likely face while swimming in Miami Beach while you stay in Miami Beach lodging. Rip current are formed when water is channeled from the beach to the sea, creating a strong current. Miami rip current can appear anywhere there is surf and are very difficult to detect. They can appear even if the weather is good and the sea is calm.

How to identify a rip current:

Rip current do have characteristics that can be recognized and indicate it presence. Even though it is difficult for beachgoers to recognize the signs, having an idea of what to look for can help prevent accidents:

- A channel of churning or choppy water
- An area where the water as a different color
- A line of foam, seaweed and other debris
- A break in the wave pattern

Some say that polarized sunglasses allow you to better see Miami rip current. Avoid swimming in the sea when you see any sign of rip current. Be careful, Miami rip current may exist even when not seen from the shore. Frequently, especially on the shore of South Beach, storms out in the sea have on impact in the current.  In such a case, even if the sea is calm, it doesn’t mean there is no rip current. If you are on vacations, staying in Miami Beach lodging , always swim on beaches where a lifeguard is present. Also, don’t forget: a blue sky doesn’t necessarily mean a calm sea.

Always swim accompanied with someone and keep a close watch on kids, inexperienced swimmers and the elderly. When you swim accompanied by others, the others will notice if you're absent and call for help.


How to survive a rip current

If you find yourself caught in a Miami rip current, STAY CALM. Your survival can depend on it. You will probably realize that you are in a rip current when you see that you are further away from the shore than you thought you would be. It is generally at this point that people start to panic, try to fight the current, get exhausted and eventually drown. Use as little energy as possible, relax and stay calm. This is the best thing you can do to ensure that you will get out safely and be able to return to your Miami Beach lodging.

Rather than swimming against the Miami rip current, swim perpendicular to it or parallel to the shore. Use visual landmarks to know when you are out of the rip current and then swim back to the beach.

If you feel tired or think you won’t be able to get out of the Miami rip current, don’t try to fight. Avoid exhaustion at all costs. Float or tread water lightly until you are out of the current. Face the beach and swim back to it. If you are too tired, wave your arms and scream loudly to draw attention to yourself.

If you see someone else caught in a Miami rip current, don’t try to help, yourself; instead, call for help. Call 911 if a lifeguard or anyone else is not available. A lot of people have died trying to save someone else caught in a rip current. Yell instructions to the victim on how to get out of the rip current and wait for help to arrive.
